Oil tanker operators are making record profits after freight rates for vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz and the wider Persian Gulf almost doubled this week, Reuters reports, citing industry sources and shipping data.
Despite the recovery, ship traffic through Hormuz remains far below the pre-war average of 125 vessels per day. Industry estimates say around 100 loaded tankers are still stuck in a backlog in the Persian Gulf, creating a vessel shortage as West Asian oil producers increase exports.
➡Daily rates for tankers operating through the Strait of Hormuz have risen to around $190,500, up from $106,500 a week earlier.
Average daily earnings for VLCCs carrying cargo from the Persian Gulf through Hormuz have surged to a record $470,000 per day, up more than $50,000 from the previous week.
